The terms high-functioning autism and Asperger’s syndrome are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct origins. Asperger’s was once a separate diagnosis used for individuals with strong language skills and average to above-average intelligence, but who still had challenges with social interaction and repetitive behaviors.

High-functioning autism is not an official diagnosis but a general term used to describe individuals on the autism spectrum who require less support in daily life. It often refers to those with milder symptoms, especially in communication and cognitive ability.

Today, both terms fall under the broader diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the DSM-5. The focus is now on support levels rather than labels, recognizing that each person’s needs are unique and may change over time.
