Autism can be identified earlier than many parents expect. While signs may appear before a child’s first birthday, most children in the U.S. are reliably diagnosed between ages 2 and 4. Research shows early developmental differences such as limited eye contact, delayed babbling, or fewer gestures often emerge between 12 and 24 months.

How is Autism Diagnosed?

According to CDC data, the average age of autism diagnosis is around 4 years old, with many children receiving their first evaluation at about 36 months. Pediatric guidelines recommend autism‑specific screenings at 18 and 24 months, helping providers catch early signs and begin support sooner.

Early diagnosis matters. When children receive ABA therapy and developmental support as early as possible, they often make stronger progress in communication, behavior, and daily living skills. Families also gain clarity and guidance during a critical stage of growth.
