Yes, autism is more commonly diagnosed today than it was two decades ago. In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that about 1 in 150 children were identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). By 2020, that number had risen to 1 in 36 children, and the most recent data shows prevalence continuing to increase.

What Is the Autism Spectrum?

Why the rise? Experts point to several factors. First, greater awareness among parents, educators, and healthcare providers means more children are screened earlier. Second, expanded diagnostic criteria now capture a wider range of developmental differences. Third, improved access to services has encouraged families to seek evaluations. While genetics and environmental influences may also play a role, the biggest driver appears to be better recognition and reporting.

For families, this increase highlights the importance of early intervention. ABA therapy remains one of the most effective, evidence‑based approaches to supporting children with autism in communication, social skills, and independence.
