Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can present differently in each child, but by age 4, certain signs often become more noticeable. Common indicators include delayed speech or language development, limited eye contact, and difficulty engaging in social interactions. Many children may prefer routines, show repetitive behaviors such as hand-flapping or lining up toys, and struggle with pretend play. Some may also display sensory sensitivities, reacting strongly to sounds, textures, or lights.
Parents might notice that their child doesn’t respond to their name consistently, prefers to play alone, or has intense interests in specific topics or objects. Emotional understanding can also be challenging, making it harder for children to recognize or express feelings.
It’s important to remember that every child develops at their own pace, and these signs don’t always mean autism. However, if several of these behaviors are present, seeking a professional evaluation can provide clarity and open the door to early support.
At Admire ABA, we specialize in compassionate, individualized ABA therapy in Maryland that helps children build communication, social, and daily living skills.
