Autism levels (Level 1, 2, and 3) describe the amount of support a person needs at a given time, not their intelligence or potential. According to the CDC, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) varies widely in presentation and support needs.
So, can someone go from Level 3 to Level 1? In some cases, support needs can significantly decrease over time, especially with early, consistent intervention. We’ve seen children in Maryland who initially required very substantial support (limited communication, high behavioral needs) later develop functional language, improved emotional regulation, and greater independence after structured ABA therapy.
However, autism itself does not “go away.” What changes is skill development and the level of assistance required. As children build communication, social, and daily living skills, their support classification may shift during re-evaluation.
Every child’s journey is unique. The goal isn’t changing a label, it’s increasing independence and quality of life.
At Admire ABA, we provide individualized, evidence-based ABA therapy in Maryland to help children grow at their own pace.
